Beer Pioneers
Our brewery was started by two college roommates on a mission to bring craft brewing to Southern California. With the help of an uncle- renowned master brewer Karl Strauss- they began drafting their plans on the beaches of San Diego. When Karl Strauss Brewing Company opened its doors in 1989, it was the first craft brewery in San Diego in over 50 years. Today, our beer is enjoyed at bars, grocery stores and restaurants throughout Southern California, including our six Brewery Restaurants.
The Craft
Brewed locally in small batches, we brew and bottle over 30 beers, including our Flagships, Seasonals and Special Releases. We use only the finest ingredients and implement a rigorous quality control system to ensure the highest levels of taste and consistency. From complex Belgian ales to bold American IPAs, from crisp pilsners to hearty stouts, we take pride in brewing a diverse range of flavorful ales and lagers that comfort, inspire, and challenge all at the same time.
Our Namesake
Born on the premises of his father's brewery, Karl Strauss was destined to brew beer. After attending the University of Munich-Weihenstephan, the most prestigious brewing school in the world, he came to the United States where he spent almost 45 years working for one of the country's largest breweries. He then began a new career as a brewery consultant, providing expert advice to breweries all over the world. Karl oversaw brewery design, brewer training, and beer recipes when we started in 1989, and served as our Master Brewer until he passed in 2006. Karl's love of life, respect for others, and passion for handcrafted beer serves as the foundation of our company to this day.
